PM Modi to address valedictory session of Vichar Mahakumbh
·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the valedictory session of the three-day event of the International Vichar Mahakumbh, which would conclude on May 14 at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.
·          Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena will be the guest of honour.

New IPR policy retains access to cheap drugs
·         The NDA government announced the long-pending, “all-encompassing” National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy.
·         The Policy, to be reviewed every five years, aims to push IPRs as a marketable financial asset, promote innovation and entrepreneurship, while protecting public interest including ensuring the availability of essential and life-saving drugs at affordable prices.

Dial-100 emergency service set to be launched in UP in October
·         The ‘Dial-100’ is set to be launched across Uttar Pradesh on October 2, officials said.
·         Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav along with state government advisor Venkat Changavilli reviewed the progress made so far in the project.
·         He himself would launch the service in Lucknow, Agra, Kanpur, Jhansi and Ghaziabad.
UN Backs Summit to Fight Boko Haram across Africa – Security Council
·         The UN has given its support to a regional security summit among four sub-Saharan nations of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon this weekend to strengthen the fight against the Islamist group Boko Haram.
·         The Security Council statement unanimously condemns all terrorist attacks, abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin region.

US House Passes Comprehensive Bill on Painkiller Addiction
·         The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a comprehensive bill on opioid abuse, a group of 18 measures designed to combat the nation’s epidemic of addiction to painkillers.
China’s industrial output up 6% year-on-year in April
China’s industrial output rose 6.0% year-on-year in April, the government said, moderating from the previous month, raising questions over the strength of a rebound in the world’s second-largest economy.

Six PSU banks report Rs 7k crore loss as defaults mount
·         Nearly Rs 7,000 crore of fourth quarter losses reported by six public sector banks showed that the bad loan problem for banks is far from over.
·         The biggest surprise was the Rs 3230 crore loss reported by Bank of Baroda.
·         Union Bank of India was the only bank which made a profit of Rs 97 crore in the fourth quarter was the only PSU bank to avoid a loss.
·         All other lenders Central Bank, UCO Bank, Allahabad Bank and Dena Bank reported losses.

SEBI to tighten KYC, transfer norms for P-Notes
·         Acting upon recommendations of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money, market watchdog SEBI plans to tighten due diligence requirements for issuance and transfer of controversy-ridden P-Notes and put the onus on investors to ensure compliance with anti-money laundering law.

Pfizer Inc takes steps to block its drugs from use in lethal injections
·         Pfizer Inc has taken steps to ensure that none of its products are used in lethal injections, the largest US drugmaker said.

·         The move shuts off the last remaining open market source of drugs used in executions, following similar actions by more than 20 U.S. and European drugmakers, according to a report in the New York Times.

·         Scientists have found material in rock formations that dates back to shortly after the Earth formed, a discovery that may help understand the processes that shaped our planet over the last 4.5 billion years.

Rare blue galaxy may shed new light on Big Bang
·         Astronomers have discovered a faint blue galaxy about 30 mn light-years from Earth that could shed new light on conditions at the birth of the universe.
·         The galaxy nicknamed Leoncino, or “little lion”, located in the constellation Leo Minor, contains the lowest level of heavy chemical elements, or “metals” ever observed in a gravitationally bound system of stars.

Apple invests $1bn in Uber’s rival
·         Apple is investing $1 billion in Didi, giving the Chinese ride-hailing startup a powerful ally and dealing a blow to Uber Technologies as it tries to build its business in the country.
·         The iPhone maker will help Didi build up a ride-sharing platform that handles more than 11 mn rides a day and serves about 300 mn users across China.

Gianni Infantino names Fatma Samoura as Fifa’s first female secretary general
·         Fifa’s new president, Gianni Infantino, has appointed the first female secretary general in the organisation’s chequered history as he battles to restore its battered reputation.
·         Infantino said Fatma Samoura, a Senegalese UN official with no previous experience in sport, would bring a “fresh wind” as its most senior executive as he attempts to convince the world that Fifa is capable of reform.

·         Former India captain Anil Kumble was re-appointed ICC Cricket Committee chairman for a 2ndterm of three years while his former team-mate and batting great Rahul Dravid was named member of the top panel.

·         Indian spiritual leader Baba Hardev Singh, current leader of the Sant Nirankari Mission, passed away. He was 62.

World’s oldest person, 116, dies in New York City
·         The world’s oldest living person, 116-year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones, died in New York City.

·         Jones, who was born in the southern US state of Alabama in 1899, was the daughter of sharecroppers and granddaughter of slaves.
